The portraits are represented in a way which attempts to capture something of the character of the sitter. With this in mind I approach the task by concentrating on those aspects of the portrait which are objective, such as the composition, is the head turned or facing the viewer, for example, the arrangement of colour and the underdrawing so that the representation is a close likeness to the sitter.
By concentrating on the formal qualities of the painting the poetic should follow and different readings of the image can be found.
